Alicia Keys Reigns At NAACP Image Awards; Plus Britney Spears ...
Alicia Keys took home four trophies from the NAACP Image Awards, held at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium Thursday night. She won the Outstanding Album and Outstanding Female Artist prizes, as well as the top video and song awards. Other honorees included Chris Brown, Jordin Sparks, Denzel Washington and Janet Jackson. Washington and his "Great Debaters" co-star Jurnee Smollett won the Best Actor and Actress prizes for film, while Jackson received the Best Supporting Actress honor for her work in "Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?" ... As Britney Spears' father extended control over her affairs in Los Angeles on Thursday, a New York attorney attempted to undo them by taking the conservatorship to federal court. Claiming he represents the singer — despite a judge already deciding she's unable to retain counsel of her own just yet — attorney Jon Eardley filed a claim that the singer's conservatorship deprives her of her civil liberties, since she's been denied the right to meet freely with whom she chooses (as her father has the power to restrict visitors); make and receive phone calls (since a restraining order prevents manager Sam Lutfi from contacting her); drive a car (since her father hired security to do that for her); and gain access to money or credit cards (since her finances are being handled by her trust).
Winter Garden Distraction Thief Always Wears Medical Scrubs
WINTER GARDEN, Fla. -- Police in Winter Garden are looking for a thief wearing an unusual outfit. Each time the crook targets someone, she's been wearing medical scrubs. Police said the bandit has been stealing people's wallets and then using their credit cards. For police, the images are very clear, showing three females using a stolen credit card to buy thousands in electronics. But less than an hour earlier, they were posing as church-going customers with the best of intentions While employees at Trophies Unlimited helped their customers, Tammy Carson's wallet disappeared from her desk. At least twice in Winter Garden, and more times in Ocoee, groups have entered stores to distract employees while at the same time raiding purses. In both Winter Garden cases, the same woman was involved and caught on tape wearing scrubs as if she were a nurse or doctor.
Why are baying men still telling women what to do with their bodies?
MEN DON'T have abortions. Men don't get cervical cancer, either. Look at me, boy genius: I managed to work that out for myself. In fact, a large number of things never happen to men. Does this prevent us from arguing over these things, from debating, legislating, or presuming a right to decide? If you take the question even half-seriously, you must live in a world where men who take vows of chastity do not hand out instructions on sexual hygiene and private morality. When I was younger, many men regarded contraception as someone else's problem. From what I hear, some things never change, despite - perhaps because of - the brute fact of Aids. Yet that blight had not been imagined when I first became, in the dismal phrase, "sexually active". We had the pill; we had legal abortion as required; we had liberties unparalleled in history.
Palo Alto Online News

(Read the letter) The letter, released late Friday morning, says department investigators are working "tirelessly" to complete the probe and that the department understands the importance of the theater to the community. Johnson said the investigation to date has included: Witness and employee interviews. Review and analysis of thousands of city documents and e-mails. Search warrants served on numerous employee bank accounts (the average turnaround time for obtaining information from these searches is six to eight weeks).
The best kept e-secret at JPJ
PETALING JAYA: Few drivers realise that they can renew their driving licences online without having to leave the comfort of their homes. And for a small fee, they can even have their licence renewal slip delivered to them by registered mail or courier. With few knowing about the facility available on the Road Transport Department's (JPJ) website since April last year, the response to the online renewal service has been poor. JPJ director-general Datuk Ahmad Mustapha Abdul Rashid said only 687 people renewed their licences online so far, way short of the 1,000-driver target expected in the first year of implementation. Every year, some seven million motorist renew their licences. Maybe it is because it has not been promoted enough by the e-services (concessionaires). But hopefully things will pick up.
ID theft inquiry after death of pedestrian
(Editor's Note: Northwest Airlines initially told the P-I last Friday that the suspect was not an employee of the company. It later confirmed that he was. Earlier versions of this article reflected the original, erroneous information.) Seattle police were investigating whether a driver suspected of killing a pedestrian in a Central Area intersection last month is an identity thief after several stolen credit cards and a list of credit card numbers were found in his vehicle, according to court documents. The 24-year-old man also may have stolen a Minnesota woman's credit cards to buy a $1,500 television, which was loaded in the back of his 2001 Jeep Cherokee, according to a search warrant affidavit filed in King County Superior Court. Police found the items, including the television, on Jan.

Judge rules for Kinge in civil trial
A state Court of Claims judge has filed in favor of Shirley Kinge in her case against New York state for negligence and malicious prosecution over her link to the 1989 murder of the Harris family of Ellis Hollow. Judge Nicholas Midey Jr. found that a state police senior investigator did not properly supervise a forensic investigator later found to have fabricated and lied about fingerprints linking Kinge, now 72, to the scene of the murders. .
