| David Cameron shops at the Co-op in search of a Tory dividend
A political scrap has broken out over the counter of the Co-op. Best known as a high street shop providing reliable, cheap food and distinctive "divi" stamps — eventually replaced by a plastic dividend card — the co-operative movement was for many a chance to save by pooling resources in trade, credit and housing. For still others it was a life-changing opportunity: the young Fred Perry, whose father was a senior official in the Co-operative Party, learnt to play tennis on an Edwardian co-operative housing estate and went on to win Wimbledon three times. The Co-op is also a powerful and long-standing political idea — which Gordon Brown and David Cameron are competing to claim as their own. The Co-op movement has long been associated with the Left: the Co-operative Party and the Labour Party have been in formal alliance since 1927.
Alicia Keys Reigns At NAACP Image Awards; Plus Britney Spears ...
Alicia Keys took home four trophies from the NAACP Image Awards, held at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium Thursday night. She won the Outstanding Album and Outstanding Female Artist prizes, as well as the top video and song awards. Other honorees included Chris Brown, Jordin Sparks, Denzel Washington and Janet Jackson. Washington and his "Great Debaters" co-star Jurnee Smollett won the Best Actor and Actress prizes for film, while Jackson received the Best Supporting Actress honor for her work in "Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?" ... As Britney Spears' father extended control over her affairs in Los Angeles on Thursday, a New York attorney attempted to undo them by taking the conservatorship to federal court. Claiming he represents the singer — despite a judge already deciding she's unable to retain counsel of her own just yet — attorney Jon Eardley filed a claim that the singer's conservatorship deprives her of her civil liberties, since she's been denied the right to meet freely with whom she chooses (as her father has the power to restrict visitors); make and receive phone calls (since a restraining order prevents manager Sam Lutfi from contacting her); drive a car (since her father hired security to do that for her); and gain access to money or credit cards (since her finances are being handled by her trust).
Winter Garden Distraction Thief Always Wears Medical Scrubs
WINTER GARDEN, Fla. -- Police in Winter Garden are looking for a thief wearing an unusual outfit. Each time the crook targets someone, she's been wearing medical scrubs. Police said the bandit has been stealing people's wallets and then using their credit cards. For police, the images are very clear, showing three females using a stolen credit card to buy thousands in electronics. But less than an hour earlier, they were posing as church-going customers with the best of intentions While employees at Trophies Unlimited helped their customers, Tammy Carson's wallet disappeared from her desk. At least twice in Winter Garden, and more times in Ocoee, groups have entered stores to distract employees while at the same time raiding purses. In both Winter Garden cases, the same woman was involved and caught on tape wearing scrubs as if she were a nurse or doctor.
Visa Charges On
Not the best time, you might think, to sell shares in the biggest initial public offering (IPO) in Wall Street history. Especially not a financial IPO. Yet here we have credit-card giant Visa, now owned by its member banks, announcing plans to peddle up to 446 million shares of stock in late March for an expected take of between $15 billion and $19 billion. Giant IPOS are usually a sign of good, or at least frothy, times. The current record haul for a U.S. IPO, $10.6 billion, was reaped by AT&T Wireless in April 2000--just after the great tech-stock bubble began to deflate but before anybody realized it. (The world-record holder is and apparently will remain the Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, which raised $21.6 billion in an IPO in 2006.) What gives with Visa? One possibility is that the company and its investment bankers are deluded and the IPO will crash and burn--but the current thinking on the Street is that it won't have trouble finding buyers.
