Ren Ci under investigation for financial discrepancies

It is believed that the matter involves millions of dollars of interest-free loans to several companies over the past decade. The second largest charity under the Ministry of Health, after the National Kidney Foundation, Ren Ci will lose its Institution of Public Character (IPC) status on Nov 27, when it is due for renewal.

This means that while it can continue to accept donations, donors will not enjoy tax exemption.

Ren Ci, which has 120 nursing home patients and 324 chronic sick patients, will continue its day to day activities.

A statement from the ministry on Wednesday said a review of the charity had 'identified some possible irregularities in certain financial transactions involving Ren Ci and certain external organisations'.

The ministry will start an inquiry 'to establish a fuller and better understanding of these irregularities'.

That's the ballgame: Toshiba bows out of HD DVD

The good news, I'm buying every discounted HD-DVD I can get my hands on. Hopefully they will be under ten bucks. -------------- I'll even be the better man and say congratulations to Benjamin / Dave. Your character is shown by your actions, this place will stink of his farts for a long time as he gloats.

Crime busters keep a vigilant eye

Sub Inspector (SI) Lakmal Jayawickrama and his team of police officers were doing their customary rounds in the Mirihana Police area of the Nugegoda Police Division at night. They were part of the new mobile unit deployed under newly established ‘Security Eye’ programme.

Suddenly their CDMA phone started ringing. It was an operator from the emergency 119 centre on the other end. He alerted the team of a call the emergency centre had received from a resident who said he had spotted his Toyota Hiace van, which was stolen way back in 1997, roaming around the Kotte area.

Frommer: Check bank charges before using credit card overseas

What credit cards should you use if you plan to travel abroad? The mathematics are fairly clear.

You start with the fact that all the big banks issuing credit cards charge as much as 3 percent of the total when that card is used for a transaction in a foreign currency. And that expense is over and above the 1 percent charged by Visa and MasterCard for converting the foreign currency payment into U.S. dollars.

Visa and MasterCard perform a service in return for their 1 percent charge. The largest credit-card issuers in America -- Bank of America, Citibank, Fifth Third Bank, JP Morgan Chase, Simmons First Bank and Wells Fargo -- all charge 3 percent for doing nothing.

American Express charges 2 percent.

Wachovia and Washington Mutual charge 1 percent.

Sweet, sweet music

From there I began buying up CDs like they were going out of fashion (it's like I was predicting the future…spooky). I took my friend's cue on Britpop and my collection mostly comprised artists like Pulp, Oasis, Elastica, Suede, the Charlatans, Ocean Colour Scene, Ash, Stone Roses, Supergrass, Catatonia, and so on.

A short while later I began dating a boy who was a huge music nerd and he made a mix-tape for me (on actual cassette, remember those days?). On this tape were artists like Belle and Sebastian, the Auteurs, the Kinks, Boo Radleys, Joy Division, and most significantly – Manic Street Preachers.

I used this tape (and the boy) to expand my musical horizons. I began devouring magazines, sticking up posters, camping outside venues, recording videos off TV, and reading music-related books.

Top Blogs Hit All the Right Links

Your commitment to research, write and stay on top of the news on a given topic will be the greatest challenge. Your reward could be placing above the fold on a Google search. While it takes time to build a cache of relevant posts, blog placement can be achieved through relevant content, and inbound and outbound links to other sites.

Blog reputation, reach and value are derived from linking in and linking out to other sources that are relevant to your topic -- whether they are mainstream press, nonprofit public interest sites, or other law blogs, even those of your competitors. As Kevin O'Keefe, President of LexBlog said, "Imagine a legal conference or seminar where lawyers never referred to what another said. Imagine a legal article not referencing previous writings by other lawyers.

Pa. Photographer Couple Charged With Theft

Authorities said he preyed on a guest at one of those events.Authorities said photographer Steve Raab stole a guest's purse during a Bat Mitzvah at the Philmont Country Club on February 2."To have someone violate that trust and steal at a bat mitzvah is just outrageous," Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman said.Police said Raab and his wife, Susan, then attempted to use to the victim's credit card to run up hundreds of dollars in charges."These two people are preying on people who come to an event, just to have fun, to relax, and to enjoy their family and friends, never expecting that they would be victimized," Ferman said.Despite the arrests, the Raab's business "Creative Photography & Video" remains open for business.
