AT ITS BEST the online classifieds site Craigslist is an astonishing display of market economics, where bargains disappear moments after they are posted. With that in mind 32-year-old Kenneth Gomez leaped at the opportunity last October when he saw an irresistible real estate deal — and got Craigslist at its worst.

The one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan's East Village listed for $900 a month — well below average in a neighborhood that defines downtown chic. After Gomez responded to the ad, a woman named Dani McGhie replied to say that Gomez was a good candidate to sublet her apartment, but she was in London and couldn't make it back to the States to hand over the keys. "Obviously, we need a way to complete this deal," she wrote. She proposed that Gomez wire one month's rent as a security deposit, and she would send the keys via two-day shipping.

Fame and fortune: Trisha Goddard

On the one hand I'm a hoarder, and I think that's because there was never any extra money around when I was a child. I didn't get given pocket money – I had to do jobs so I've always been a grafter.

But there's another part of me that loves to spend money because I still can't believe it when my account is not in the red. I find a good credit balance is a source of great excitement.

Are you cautious with money or liberal?

I'm somewhere between. As soon as I get paid anything 40 per cent of it goes offshore and sits in a deposit account waiting for the taxman.

Other than that I believe money is to be enjoyed, so when it comes to holidays, for example, I won't scrimp. A New York taxi driver said to me, "I never saw a Securicor van in a funeral procession", and that's how I feel about spending money on the family.

Several sure signs of spring

LINCOLN, Neb. A reader wrote to me a while back, lamenting this endless winter and asking what I considered a sure sign of spring. The first thing that came to mind was the sound of melting snow dripping in the downspouts. The second thing, of course, would be no sound at all - because the snow already has melted.

Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales accused of expenses rort

The scandal engulfing Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales has spread, with a former executive claiming Wales improperly used the non-profit organisation's funds for his own lavish recreation.

Danny Wool, who was effectively Wales' right-hand man for two years before he left the donor-supported Wikimedia Foundation last year, said Wales had tried to claim the cost of items such as a visit to a massage parlour in Moscow and expensive bottles of wine.

The claims come just as Wales' messy break-up with a girlfriend he met via his free online encyclopedia plays out in the public domain. It includes claims Wales broke Wikipedia's own conflict of interest rules by attempting to influence the site's editing process.

Wales has denied any wrongdoing.

"Jimbeau [Wool's nickname for his former boss] was certainly not frugal in his spending on his endless trips abroad, but when it came to handing in receipts, he could be somewhat careless," Wool wrote in a post on his personal blog.

PreS—Simple sentences in English and Spanish describe the experiences of being part of an extended Latino family. There are definitely some drawbacks, such as having to share hand-me-down clothes. Grandpa's lap also has to be shared, but Grandma's hugs are big enough for everyone. Toys aren't always shared and others are blamed when something goes wrong. But regardless, these cousins have a strong bond. Rodriguez's illustrations attempt to re-create the chaos that ensues when a large family gets together, but the figures often appear stiff and lifeless. The Spanish translation has some missteps, especially the sentence, "We sing and dance in make-believe parades." The Spanish translation renders this as "…desfiles de mentira," literally "parades of lies." Surely there is a gentler way to translate this idea.
