| Obama's Hispanderama
How do you propose to address the high unemployment rates and the declining wages in the African-American community that are related to the flood of immigrant labor?" Senator Obama, you want to go first on that? And it's for both of you. OBAMA: Well, let me first of all say that I have worked on the streets of Chicago as an organizer with people who have been laid off from steel plants, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, and, you know, all of them are feeling economically insecure right now, and they have been for many years. Before the latest round of immigrants showed up, you had huge unemployment rates among African-American youth. And, so, I think to suggest somehow that the problem that we're seeing in inner-city unemployment, for example, is attributable to immigrants, I think, is a case of scapegoating that I do not believe in, I do not subscribe to.
Work release for two in Roslyn school scandal
Two of the four people sentenced to prison for their part in the $11-million Roslyn schools embezzlement scandal are out on work release, state corrections officials said. Debra Rigano, the former accounts clerk who was sentenced to 2 to 6 years in October 2006, works outside of a correctional facility seven days a week, officials said. At night, she returns to Bayview Correctional Facility in Manhattan, where she'll be eligible for release in September. Officials declined to say where Rigano works, citing privacy concerns. .
No shield to $1.2m claim by client
A federal judge has cleared the way for a Waltham woman to try to collect $1.2 million from a Needham businessman with a history of legal problems, ruling last week that bankruptcy proceedings do not protect him from her fraud claim. Judge William C. Hillman, of the US Bankruptcy Court in Boston, entered the default judgment Wednesday against businessman Kenneth L. Kaplan. The judge said he was issuing the judgment in Kaplan's bankruptcy case because he had failed to file a pretrial statement by Dec. 21 as ordered by the court. Susan Schneider has accused Kaplan of improperly using his expertise as a certified public accountant to defraud her out of the money, which she acquired from the 2003 sale of her home, IRA distributions, and other investments. Schneider's bid to protect her claim on Kaplan's assets had been scheduled to be considered in court tomorrow, but the session was canceled when Hillman is sued his judgment.

We are democrats and progressives. We propose here a fresh political alignment. Many of us belong to the Left, but the principles that we set out are not exclusive. We reach out, rather, beyond the socialist Left towards egalitarian liberals and others of unambiguous democratic commitment. Indeed, the reconfiguration of progressive opinion that we aim for involves drawing a line between the forces of the Left that remain true to its authentic values, and currents that have lately shown themselves rather too flexible about these values. It involves making common cause with genuine democrats, whether socialist or not. The present initiative has its roots in and has found a constituency through the Internet, especially the "blogosphere". It is our perception, however, that this constituency is under-represented elsewhere — in much of the media and the other forums of contemporary political life.

Lady Luck deserts Devizes
DEVIZES Town were the victims of bad luck as they lost 1-0 to Welton Rovers in the Toolstation league Premier Division at Nursteed Road last night. Welton scored the winner after 20 minutes but Devizes were unhappy after Ryan Trowbridge was elbowed in the lead-up. Adam Giles smacked a free kick against the bar and Daine O'Connor also hit the woodwork with a volley as Devizes sensed it was not to be their night. Devizes assistant boss Steve Hale said: "It was quite a tight game, I wouldn't say either side deserved to win it. "The players that have gone out there have worked hard and given everything. "But injuries and unavailability are really hurting us at the minute. With budget cuts it's really difficult to freshen the squad up." .
