Trade Deadline-A-Palooza ‘08!

So, he may just be incline to roll the dice, not deal Hossa away, obtain the few extra pieces that the cap room affords, hope the team can make a push into the playoffs and, in doing so, convince Hossa to resign…saving his job.

Call it his Hail Mary, if you will.

Am I willing to put any wager on if that is what will actually happen? Err…uh….umm…let's go to our cyber-reporters

George Osborne's green gimmick

George Osborne thinks he has an answer to our saving malaise: a green individual savings account.

This is being referred to as the "Gisa" (no, we don't know how to pronounce it, either, though we think it might rhyme with Lisa).

Investors could apparently save thousands by putting their money into tax-free "green Isas'' (which would have a bigger allowance of, say, £9,000, rather than £7,000 for ordinary Isas) and reduce carbon emissions at the same time.

It is not just savers who will benefit -qualifying companies will be boosted by billions in extra revenue.

To qualify for inclusion in a Gisa, companies would need to gain a green kitemark. The likes of Marks & Spencer and GlaxoSmithKline, which are committed to big reductions in their carbon emissions would probably be eligible.

Urban travel legends: Separating fact from fiction

Business travelers are a secretive, clannish lot, and we take perverse pride in knowing the picayune details of how life works on the road. If there's an airline rule, we claim to know and maybe even understand it. A strange hotel policy? We feign indifference and insist we heard about it years ago.

Then there are those persistent factoids that can only be classified as Urban Travel Legends. They're usually not true — or at least they haven't been true for quite some time — yet they continue to clutter our database of travel knowledge. Here are several of the most enduring legends, along with some clear-eyed facts.

The airline secret code
The hardest-to-kill legend is the claim that you'll receive special treatment from an airline only if you utter the secret code “Rule 240." Whenever your flight is canceled or seriously delayed, the story goes, simply ask the gate agent to Rule 240 you, and the airline will magically place you, at no additional cost, on the next available flight of any other carrier flying the route.

Jefferson Centenarian Reaps Benefits From Girl Scout Cookies

It really was something. It really saved me," Preston said.

When asked if Thin Mints were the secret to her longevity, Preston responded, "I guess they are." Although the cookies saved her life, Preston credits peanut butter for her longevity. "I eat it every day. My sister used to say I had bread with my peanut butter." Today Preston eats cashew butter.

"I've eaten well all my life. I love to eat. My mother used to say I ate like every meal was my last good meal." Preston added.

"I've had a very active life." Preston was born on June 28, 1903 in Spencer, Mass. She walked to school, and home for lunch and back to school every day over the steep hills in Spencer. "That's why I had such strong legs." She enjoyed playing tennis for many years. She attended Brown University for three years, and then spent her 20th year aboard the steamer Carinthia of the Cunard Line with her sister, Barbara, and aunt and uncle touring the world.

Conservative wildcard a hit with young voters

Party strategists dismiss this as negative appeal that will not translate into votes. Responding to the record day of donations, Republican consultant Frank Lutz told Time Magazine that Paul's supporters "just like him because he's the most anti-establishment of all the candidates, the most likely to look at the camera during the debates and say, Hey, Washington, f*** you'."

The language doesn't suit Paul, an unfailingly courteous retired obstetrician, but his voting record in the House of Representatives is indeed one of intractable opposition to anything he perceives to be unconstitutional. He has been the lone dissenter in numerous votes, from a resolution to censure the Sudanese government over genocide in Darfur to a proposal to award Rosa Parks a golden Congressional medal.

Ferguson's tenure is over, MLSE's structure to change?

You have to ask the question though, do we love them because they give us something to complain about. How many blogs do you see with this much attention writing about how great Detroit is playing?

Keep your stick on the ice Leaf fans, it doesn't look good. :0)

Romney suspends campaign

Mitt Romney announced he is suspending his presidential bid, all but annointing John McCain as the Republican nominee.

In a speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, Romney said he didn't want a Democrat to win the White House.

"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and frankly I would be making it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. Frankly, in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," he said.

"This is not an easy decision for me. I hate to lose. My family, my friends and our supporters... many of you right here in this room have given a great deal to get me where I have a shot at becoming President.

US services data, bid talk help FTSE gain 1.5 pct

Other European shares also ended higher, mirroring a trend in U.S. stock markets after a better-than-expected reading for a gauge of U.S. service sector activity. See [ID:nWEN4340]

"Wall Street has been generally impressed with the economic data as this is heaping on the pressure for the Fed to effect another rate cut later in the month which will further boost the popularity of stocks," said Jimmy Yates, a trader at CMC Markets.

The UK's blue-chip index has now fallen over 9 percent this year on fears of a U.S. recession and further credit-related writedowns by financial institutions.

Among shares, talk of a rescue deal for ailing U.S. bond insurer Ambac Financial Group (ABK.N: Quote, Profile, Research) boosted insurers.

Prudential (PRU.L: Quote, Profile, Research) was 6.8 percent higher after shareholders in China's Ping An Insurance (2318.HK: Quote, Profile, Research) (601318.SS: Quote, Profile, Research) approved a plan to raise about $17 billion, prompting fresh speculation it could take a stake in a European insurer.

Hard times keep pawnshops busy

Locally At the Kendallville Pawn Shop in downtown Kendallville, manager Kenny Gohn said he has seen increased business as more people who need money come in. And with it being tax season, Gohn said many people are coming in to spend their refunds."I have hardly any TVs here right now," Gohn said Thursday. Victor Amato, district manager for Lev's Pawn Shop, with two locations in Fort Wayne, said business is growing, but it has grown steadily the past three to five years. But Amato said the slowing economy is not the only factor in the pawnshop's growth. With the rapid increase in the value of gold, Lev's is seeing a large increase in pawned jewelry, especially gold. Amato also said customers are coming to Lev's to buy high-definition TVs and video-game systems with their tax refunds. About 75 percent of people who pawn items at Lev's get their items back, Amati said.
